Southern California rapper Ariano presents the Wackoe-directed music video for “Ride On”, his new collaboration with Portland, Oregon producer Jade River which will appear on Ink In My Eyes, their forthcoming joint EP on southern California-based label Just-Us.
How did you get your start rapping?
I started writing poetry at the age of 13. My mother bought me some of my first records. She bought me the first Tribe Called Quest and Public Enemy records. That inspired me to start writing my own lyrics as a teenager.
How would you describe your style?
I would describe my style as melodic-driven. I usually start with writing the hook first. I grew up watching the greats like Nate Dogg. I watched how they started with the hook and developed the song from there. I would say my style is soulful hip-hop.
What was it like working with Snoop Dogg?
It was great to work with Snoop Dogg. Early on in my career I had produced some music for him on his Welcome To The Church mixtapes he was putting out in stores in the late ‘90s. Being able to be a part of a song and video with him was like watching my career in full circle.
What does your new single “Ride On” mean to you?
My new singles “Ride On”and “Leader The Follow” mean not holding back to me. They are not metaphor-driven. Both songs are very direct. I feel they both represent the mindstate of certain young artists and people who have been raised on the Internet. This generation has had the opportunity to read and study up on everything but only seem to take a glance and not look indepth into history and culture. My two new singles hopefully take you into the mindstate of that.
What can we expect from Ink In My Eyes?
A well-rounded project with current trap production without the lame “turn up”-driven content. I tried to take a familiar sound that kids are listening to but actually talk about something while they are bumping the bass-heavy beats. I am working with Cookbook from LA Symphony. He basically has let me do whatever I want with the music and visuals and has been very supportive of my vision. I am looking forward to releasing the EP and performing the songs to as many people as possible. The EP is produced by Jade River and features my long time friend in collaborator LDontheCut.
